Saturday November 6th (Final Project Proposal)

Saturday November 6th (Final Project Proposal)

For my final project for this class on contemporary art I have two ideas. First, I would like to explore the idea of public perception within the world of contemporary art. As an art historian, I have always studied past art with a focus on Medieval works. Contemporary art is very new to me and I think the problems facing artist’s today are also very interesting. As we went through the semester the reception of contemporary art began to interest me. There are a number of different things that I could focus on including: the art market, those who “do not get contemporary art” as it is a very broad topic. I am also thinking of creating a story map focusing on art made during the time of covid and quarantine. I think this might be an easier option that is more relevant to a lot of the art we have seen in the modern context. I think it might also be interesting to look at as many different artists were doing very different things. The few artist’s that I am thinking of focusing on at the moment are: Jennifer Dalton, Valerie Hegarty, andAlison Elizabeth Taylor. I will likely add other artist’s into the mix along the way as well, so as to create a more expansive map. Another aspect of this topic that I could work with is the senior studio exhibition from last year. Many of these artists were working from home trying to create their final thesis exhibitions. The work is currently being displayed in the Korn gallery and I think it would be an interesting and valuable component to the process and display of art of quarantine. I can also display this alongside a map of the NYC and the New York Times’s case tracker. There’s quite a lot I can do with this topic, even discussing accessibility in art and zoom, and I’m leaning toward it as I think I will have more room. I will link a few sources/articles that I have found and am reading as research for the project below:
